‘Building on the success of last year’s inaugural one-day festival, we’ve packed this year’s bigger-and-better program with inspiring live performances, workshops, storytelling and singalongs,’ says Festival Director, Polly Christie, leader of the local Pollyphonics Choir.
‘From kids to seniors, and beginners to seasoned singers, we aim to bring our immediate and wider communities together, to experience the joy of singing across a broad range of genres including folk, spiritual music and contemporary pop.’
On Friday 5 May, the Opening Night Concert in Kyneton Town Hall features The Mae Trio, a young, contemporary folk group from Melbourne, who has received acclaim in festivals across Australia, the UK and the USA. The Pollyphonics Choir will support the trio, showcasing voices from the Macedon Ranges community.
Saturday’s program includes workshops with The Mae Trio, vocal gymnast Mal Webb, and storyteller Kate Lawrence. James Rigby will lead the ‘Chunky blokey songs that chicks can sing too’ workshop, Jane Thomson will teach Australian songs, and more community choirs will perform in various Kyneton venues. The day concludes with a fabulous concert held in the Bluestone Theatre featuring Mal Webb and Kylie Morrigan, followed by a ‘pub style’ singalong, backed by local musicians.
Sunday brings the opportunity to join a massed choir with Aria Award winner Kavisha Mazzella, conducted by Polly Christie and Joseph Bromley, in Kyneton Town Hall.
‘This festival celebrates everything singing does for us,’ says Ms Christie. ‘Singing brings people together, to tell stories, to celebrate and grieve, creating social cohesion through shared experience and empathy. Singing has been proven to reduce stress and promote fitness and wellbeing.
‘The festival is a place to make new friends, bonding deeply through music. It’s also an opportunity to enjoy Kyneton’s broad range of accommodation, award winning dining and the many tempting shops on historic Piper St and elsewhere.
