Following Easter, and in preparation for Ascension Day, Coro Austral will perform Tomás Luis de Victoria’s beautiful motet and mass Ascendens Christus in Altum (Christ ascended on high) in the magnificent ‘gothic’ acoustic of St Augustine’s Church, Balmain on Saturday 29th April.
Artistic Director Margot McLaughlin has devised a program that combines the 16th Century Spanish Latin Mass with exceptional contemporary choral works of faith from Australia and Spain.
Coro Austral will give a rare performance of Australian composer Clare Maclean’s Aunque es de Noche (Although it is night), taken from verses by the 16th Century Spanish poet and monk St John of the Cross. They will also perform three short religious pieces by leading Australian choral composer David Basden.
While much of the music in this concert is a celebration of Christ’s gifts through crucifixion, Le Cri Des Bergers (The cry of the shepherds) by Catalan composer Bernat Vivancos is a work about loneliness, anguish and suffering that fully exploits the exceptional acoustics of St Augustine’s Church, and O Vos Omnes (O ye people) by Spanish composer Pablo Casals touches on Christ’s own suffering.
The female voices of Coro Austral will perform Vivancos’ ethereal setting of Schubert’s Ave Maria with the church’s superb William Hill organ located in the gallery high above the audience.
In this concert, both works by Bernat Vivancos will receive their Australian Premiere performances.
Since its formation in 2010 by Margot McLaughlin, Coro Austral has gained an excellent reputation as a skilled chamber choir specialising in the authentic presentation of Spanish and Latin American choral works as well as music from other traditions worldwide.
Ascendens Christus in Altumtakes place in St Augustine’s Catholic Church, Eaton St Balmain at 7.00pm on Saturday 29th April. Tickets are $30 with $25 concessions (children under 12 free), and can be purchased online at Sticky Tickets. Refreshments will be available after the performance.
