Rheinberger’s, The Star of Bethlehem, written in 1890, is a delightful Romantic choral cantata too rarely heard in Australia. The libretto, written by his wife Fanny, tells the Christmas story of shepherds, angels and the wisemen following the guiding star through a series of songs and pastoral chorusses.

Josef Gabriel Rheinberger (1839-1901) was a contemporary of Brahms and was strongly influenced by his 19th century contemporaries.  He builds on the German musical tradition of Bach, Mendelssohn and Schubert with a heartfelt Romanticism.  Whilst he is best known today for his organ music he also wrote more than 20 major sacred choral works; operas and other choral music; as well as symphonies and other orchestral and chamber music.  He was a distinguished teacher with many influential American students and some well-known Europeans including Richard Strauss and Wilhelm Furtwängler.

We are joined by local soloists Briony Davidson (Soprano) and Henrik Eneberg (Bass) to premiere a new English translation and new arrangement of this work by Rowen Fox for wind and piano chamber ensemble, choir and soloists.  Flute, Oboe, Clarinet and Cor Anglais all emphasise the exotic lyrical style of this charming work.
