Sydney University Graduate Choir Concert
featuring Joan Carden Award Finalists Performance and Judging
Mozart Requiem Performance by Sydney University Graduate Choir

Date: 13 August 2017

The Sydney University Graduate Choir is delighted to announce the three finalists in the Joan Carden Award for 2017.

This singing competition is designed to foster and showcase young professional singers and is open to singers aged between 22 and 35 years. The three finalists will perform with full orchestra at this concert. Established by the Sydney University Graduate Choir in 2004, Australian soprano icon, Joan Carden AO OBE, graciously agreed to lend her name and her expertise as a judge to the Award.

The Award has a cash prize of $6,000 and also gives the winner the opportunity to perform as a soloist in one of the Sydney University Graduate Choir’s forthcoming concerts.

This year the audience will again participate in a vote for a “People’s Choice” award. Winners will be announced at the conclusion of the concert.

The 2017 Joan Carden Award Finalists are:

  • Barbara Jin - Mezzo-soprano
  • Joshua Oxley - Tenor
  • Haotian Qi - Baritone

A highlight of the afternoon will be a performance by the Sydney University Graduate Choir of the magnificent Mozart Requiem. Accompanied by full orchestra and the organ of the Great Hall, Sydney University, this work is a masterpiece of the classical era.

Written during the final months of Mozart’s life, this work was created at the same time as his last two operas: La Clemenza di Tito and the much loved Die Zauberflӧte (or The Magic Flute). The Requiem is a deeply personal work that represents all that is profound in Mozart’s artistry. With its splendid choruses and eloquent solo parts, this work has become a cornerstone of classical vocal music.
