Love’s labours were ever thus… from the darling buds of spring love, through the searing heat of passion to the chill bitterness of rejection. A journey in song through the joy and pain of romantic love, as expressed by poets and composers from Tudor to modern times. Treat yourself to a serving of Scottish and English folk songs; 17th century madrigals (Pilkington, Farnaby Morley and Wilbye); indiscretions of shepherds and shepherdesses in Stanford’s settings of Elizabethan texts, Thea Musgrave’s settings of Sir Thomas Wyatt’s poetic evocations of a lover scorned; Schumann’s Herbstlied, and contemporary works by Rutter, Quilter and Leek. Zara Stanton (Soprano), Beverley Kennedy (Piano).
