The Queensland Choir presents American Masterpieces

A Brisbane soprano who has won acclaim as both an opera and pop singer will take centre stage when the Queensland Choir presents American Masterpieces on September 9 in St John’s Cathedral.

Former All Hallows’ School student Irena Lysiuk, 25, of Mt Gravatt, has sung with OperaQ (as Gretel in Hansel and Gretel, and other operas) and toured the east coast of Australia as part of her Triple J Unearthed band Avaberee.

Irena and Patrick Lee – one of St John's Cathedral's Head Choristers - are to be the soloists for the American Masterpieces concert, conducted by Kevin Power.

They will join with the Queensland Choir and Sinfonia of St Andrew’s to perform masterpieces including Chichester Psalms, by West Side Story composer Leonard Bernstein, and Requiem for the Living, a contemporary work by young US composer Dan Forrest.

The Sinfonia of St Andrew’s will also play Samuel Barber’s Adagio for Strings, one of the most beautiful and popular pieces of American music, which has been featured in the soundtracks of many films and TV shows.

The Queensland Choir’s director Kevin Power says, ‘’This concert should have broad appeal  as all the music is richly melodic with beautiful harmony and the Broadway-influenced Chichester Psalms in particular is great fun to sing and to listen to.”
