Jenny Mathers

Jenny Mathers has recently been appointed as the Director of Music at Korowa Anglican Girls School, having previously been Head of Music at St. Catherine’s School, Toorak, Melbourne for nine years. She takes a varied classroom load, including both the Primary and Secondary Schools. She conducts four choirs and the flagship Menuhin Orchestra and she enjoys many forms of music making, including playing the clarinet (L.Mus.A), accompanying her students on the piano (A.Mus.A), and singing (A.Mus.A) in choirs.

Jenny is passionate about using imagery in all forms of her teaching and the ‘discovery’ of the work of Rudolph von Laban when she completed her Masters of Music Education at Florida State University in 1997 was life-changing. She uses this knowledge whenever she teachers conducting, such as at the ACCET Summer School or short courses for the University of Melbourne Graduate program. Jenny has spent many years on committees for both ABODA (Australian Band and Orchestral Directors Association) and ANCA, having been the Victorian Branch treasurer for 11 years, before taking an extended break for family leave. She is now delighted to be back with ANCA as the Victorian/Tasmanian Vice-President. She was convener of the first Sounds Great! conference in 2003 and has enjoyed continued involvement with the organization of this conference, as well as the recent Choralfest in Melbourne.

Jenny is often asked to adjudicate Eisteddfods, having been to Mildura and Burnie over the last few years. She will be adjudicating the Waverley Eisteddfod in a few weeks.

From 2004-2011 he was music Director of the Wellington Orpheus Choir, conducting all of the big three Bach works to audience and critical acclaim. This year he has conducted the Bach Magnificat BWV 243a in St Paul's Cathedral which is to be broadcast on ABC Classic FM radio at 8 pm on Christmas Eve. He is currently Director of Music at Christ Church South Yarra, Melbourne and director of the new chamber choir Polyphonic Voices.

 Sharon Batterham

Sharon Batterham is a choral music specialist, with over 25 years experience as a chorister, tutor and conductor. She has studied music at the University of Melbourne, and holds both a Bachelor of Music, in composition and voice, and a Bachelor of Music Education. As a chorister, Sharon sang with the Australian Children's Choir, and travelled to Hong Kong and the United Kingdom where the choir performed at the prestigious Llangollen Musical Eisteddfod. She continued singing while at University, with the Faculty of Music choir and the Chamber Singers, and enhanced her vocal studies by performing with the Royal Philharmonic Choir, Faye Dumont Singers, CHIME Choir and Australian Youth Choir.

Conducting became a particular interest when Sharon commenced tutoring the training groups of the Victorian Boys' Choir, and she continued developing this area with positions in the Australian Girls' Choir and the CHIME Choirs. Training in choral pedagogy followed, under Rodney Eichenberger, Andre de Quadros and Doreen Rao, and Sharon was selected from conductors around the world to attend the 3rd Choral Symposium held by the Toronto Childrens' Chorus under Jean Ashworth-Bartle.

After a short break to raise a family, Sharon is now Musical Director and part owner of Southern Voices, and is the founding conductor of Harrisfield Harmonies. She has spent spare time writing musical plays for children, whilst composing and arranging choral music for her choirs.
