About Michael Fulcher

Michael has decades of experience as a voice professional. Since his early years as a chorister in the choir of St John’s Cathedral, Brisbane, he has had extensive experience as an organist, choral conductor (both chamber and orchestral/choral), chorusmaster, opera conductor, vocal coach, adjudicator and examiner, and, latterly, voice teacher. He is currently studying for a Masters degree in Vocal Pedagogy at the Queensland Conservatorium, one of Australia’s most successful vocal institutions. Based in Melbourne, he is demand as a voice teacher both in his private studio and at Melbourne Grammar School and Christ Church Grammar School.

Career highlights include events in choral music and opera. In 2008, he toured the Wellington Cathedral Choir to England and Paris, singing at venues including Westminster Abbey, Westminster Cathedral, St John’s College Cambridge and Notre Dame Cathedral, Paris. In 2010, Michael prepared the massed choirs for a performance of Mahler’s Eighth Symphony for a NZ International Arts Festival, conducted by Vladimir Ashkenazy.

Since June 2013, Michael has been Director of Music at Christ Church South Yarra in Melbourne, where he directs the mixed adult choir and the Christ Church Grammar Chapel Choir, which he founded. He has had particular success training organ scholars. From Wellington Cathedral Thomas Gaynor has gone on to win five international organ competitions, gaining his DMA (Artist’s Certificate) from Eastman School of Music. From Christ Church South Yarra, Michael How has just completed his degree at Cambridge, having been organ scholar of Gonville and Caius College.

Michael is also Artistic Director and of Polyphonic Voices (chamber choir), which collaborates with such groups as the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, Australian Romantic and Classical Orchestra, Adelaide Chamber Singers, Sydney Chamber Choir, Hilltop Hoods, Voices NZ Chamber Choir. Polyphonic Voices performs in non-standard choral venues such as the Old Melbourne Gaol, Melbourne Planetarium, National Gallery of Victoria. Michael has established an ongoing partnership with the Melbourne Chamber Orchestra through their Artistic Director, William Hennessy.

Positions held include Repetiteur at the English National Opera 2001-2002; Young Artist Conductor, Opera Queensland 1998; Young Artist Conductor, Victorian State Opera 1996; Director of Music, Trinity College, University of Melbourne 1994-96; Organist and Director of Music at Wellington Cathedral of St Paul 2004-11; Music Director of the Wellington Orpheus Choir 2004-11 and Organist of St John’s Cathedral Brisbane 2011-13.


Michael was President of the ANCA National Council from 2013-2018.
