CELEBRATE will include a selection of celebratory traditional Christmas works such as the 14th century A virgin most pure and the 15th century Chester Carol.
Contemporary compositions include the lullaby This endris night by American composer Z.Randall Stroope and English works: Bob Chilcott’s In dulci jubilo, Peter Warlock’s Bethlehem Down and, composed in 2011, Out of the orient crystal skies by Kerry Andrew.
At the centre of the CELEBRATE program The Corinthian Singers will present Francis Poulenc’s Quatre motets pour le temps de Noël, his four motets for Christmas. The shifting tonality in the work evokes the magic and mystery of the nativity witnessed by shepherds, wise men and angels.
Other works included in the program are Es ist ein Reis entsprungen by the master of 12 tone composition, Alban Berg. This beautiful and lyric piece tells the allegory of Mary as a rose blooming in winter, whilst German romantic composer Max Bruch’s In der Christnacht describes Christ as the child who brings light to the darkness.
