Cafe of the Gate of Salvation

Erskinville, NSW

Dynes Austin has been involved in music and singing for over 30 years. He began his musical career at the tender age of 5, as the understudy for Oliver in the Cunnamulla (Qld) Musical Society's production of Oliver Twist and he hasn't looked back since! During high school Dynes was heavily involved in a school choir led by a charismatic but somewhat eccentric priest. The repertoire was anything that took the choir directors fancy and included classical, latin motets, Gregorian chant, modern gospel, spirituals, pop and traditional hymns. The emphasis was on the joy of singing and love of harmony of any kind and everyone involved developed a deep appreciation of a wide range of music. Dynes' passion since then has been for the dynamic and heartfelt Gospel style. Dynes took over the role of Musical Director of The Cafe from founder Tony Backhouse in 2008. While developing his own style and voice with like-minded people, Dynes' love of music and singing is energetic and infectious. He aims to infuse as many people as he can with the joy of singing and development of personal expression through music, which is such an integral part of his own life. Dynes' vision for The Cafe is to build on the womderful legacy of previous members and directors, to assist the development of the extraordinary talent in the choir, to explore new music and revive old favourites from The Cafe's vast repertoire.
