The Sydney Welsh Choir, with about fifty men and women drawn from all parts of the Sydney area, is a significant cultural aspect of Sydney's Welsh Community. Only a minority of members were born in Wales; others have Welsh family links while there are many singers who simply enjoy our range of repertoire, passionate delivery and the camaraderie of the group. The choir began in 1979 as the Sydney Welsh Rugby Choir, and developed as an independent choir under the conductor-ship of Margaret Hughes. Our current music director is Bronwyn Hendy, who took over the baton in 2020. Since 1990 the choir has made six trips back to Wales, with concerts in many parts of Europe and North America. We have sung with famous choirs such as the Vienna Male Chorus and in venues such as The Madeleine in Paris, the Basilica of St Francis at Assisi and the American National Cathedral in Washington DC. In England we have sung at many famous cathedrals such as Canterbury, Winchester and York Minster, while in Wales we have sung at nearly all the cathedrals, most of the famous castles and at leading concert halls such as Brangwyn Hall in Swansea. In Australia, the choir has travelled widely, with concert tours to Victoria, Tasmania, South Australia and Queensland, as well as numerous shorter trips within rural NSW and the ACT. We are always on the lookout for new members and, as a mixed choir, we have many husband and wife combinations.
