Music Director/Conductor A music director/conductor is required for an established SSATBB community choir of keen mature singers due to the forthcoming retirement of the choir’s founder. The choir’s repertoire has included a wide variety of ‘a cappella’ choral music to engage the singers and entertain a concert audience. Position description and time commitment This is an exciting opportunity for a career music teacher to lead their own community choir. The choir rehearses on Monday nights at Parkside from 7pm to 9:30pm. The Music Director will be required to arrange and teach a rehearsal schedule of about 40 Monday nights and about 4 weekend rehearsals during the four term year. Rehearsals cease during the December/January school vacation and during the fortnight mid-year school vacation. Rehearsals are still held on Monday public holidays except Easter Monday. Weekend concerts are usually held both mid-year and at the end of the year. There may be additional paid opportunities for weekend events. The Music Director is an ex-officio member of the committee of Umbrella a Cappella Inc., the Association which administers the choir, and is invited to attend monthly afternoon committee meetings. Qualifications A Music degree preferably in Vocal Performance with teaching qualifications and conducting training. A qualified singing teacher with community choir experience will be preferred. Ability to use a keyboard will be required to aid learning during rehearsals. Desired skills:
willingness to continue the ‘a cappella’ style of the choir
knowledge of music to plan a broad, interesting repertoire for mature learners
ability to create a supportive, challenging and fun learning environment
knowledge of vocal skills including the importance of warm-up before rehearsing
ability to manage a group to progress learning of repertoire during rehearsals
use of own choral arrangements is possible
reliability and time management skills for rehearsals and concerts
co-operative relationship with the administrative committee
ability to encourage new members to join a community choir
Remuneration for each rehearsal will be as a sessional contractor at an agreed rate. Appointment is initially for 2025, to be reviewed and renewed by agreement.
